Rush University Medical Center (RUSH)
The objectives in this statement of work (SOW) address a number of
opportunities and challenges facing the Emergency Medicine Department
(ED) at Rush University Medical Center. During normal day-to-day
operations, the population served by the ED at RUSH greatly exceeds
the capacity of the existing facility. Available space for patient
waiting, triage and treatment is insufficient in size and number and
antiquated in design. Also, the support services provided to the ED
by ancillary functions are inadequate.
In addition, the RUSH ED has been designated the Bio-Terrorism
Response Center for the City of Chicago. The new ED must be designed
for chemical, biological and radiological type events. Thus, HSE
was hired to assist with facility planning for both peacetime and
contingency operations. Clear understanding of recent operation of
the existing ED is gained through the analysis of historical data.
However, discrete event simulation modeling is utilized for long-term
facility and operational planning.
